Gérard Grisey: ›Les espaces acoustiques‹

in Cologne and Hamburg

Together, Ensemble Modern, die International Ensemble Modern Academy and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie perform Gérard Grisey’s evening-length cycle ›Les espaces acoustiques‹ in Cologne and Hamburg. Conductor Ingo Metzmacher brings the three ensembles together in one large orchestra. The composition, rarely performed in full, is a key work of French Spectralism; in it, Gérard Grisey literally opens up »acoustic spaces« throughout its six movements. Beginning with a viola solo, the instrumentation expands to encompass a septet, an 18-piece ensemble, a chamber orchestra of 33 players and finally a full symphony orchestra with more than 80 musicians.
