›Schuberts Winterreise‹ by Hans Zender

with Julian Prégardien in a Livestream Ensemble Modern „On Air“

›Schuberts Winterreise‹ (Schubert’s Winter Journey): this is the title of a work by Hans Zender that was premiered by Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt am Main in 1993 and has become one of the most frequently performed of Zender’s works. It illuminates Franz Schubert’s well-known vocal cycle in instrumental and conceptual terms, so that Schubert’s daring anticipation of the music of the future becomes audible. Zender gave the subtitle ›composed interpretation‹ to his piece. This genre is actually indebted to Zender, created by taking the music further, making contours more precise, deconstructing forms or reworking them. Now the work can be experienced in a livestream, performed by Ensemble Modern and Julian Prégardien – the Frankfurt-born tenor and lied-expert – and conducted by Daniel Cohen.

The concert will be streamed live on 06.02.2021 (8 pm) from the Schauspiel Frankfurt. On 10.02.2021 and 13.02.2021 the recording will be shown as a replay (8 pm).

Starting at 7:45 pm, each concert begins with a prologue entitled “unerhört” (unheard-of): “unerhört” comments on the genesis of each concert. In reports and thoughts from three Ensemble Modern musicians, the process – its continuities, contradictions, motivations and emotions – becomes audible. These works by Janine Bürkli, Maria Huber and Jonathan Kim were supervised by Gerardo Naumann as part of the stage project “Das Festival”, a cooperation between the festival Frankfurter Positionen and the Institute of Theatre, Film and Media Studies at the Goethe University in Frankfurt.
