Composers in Theresienstadt
The Czech composers Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein, Rudolf Karel, Victor Ullmann and Hans Krása were interned in the Nazi concentration camp Theresienstadt (Terezín). Despite catastrophic conditions in the camp, they kept composing there, becoming protagonists of cultural life in the »model ghetto« of Theresienstadt – a cultural life that was only possible in hiding at first, but was later abused for propaganda purposes. On October 16, 1944 they were deported to the death camps. 75 years to the day after this deportation, Ensemble Modern commemorates the Theresienstadt composers in a concert at the Kunstverein Familie Montez.
