RUANG SUARA

Contemporary Music from Indonesia in Frankfurt

Eight Indonesian composers and musicians meet Ensemble Modern. In joint workshops in Jakarta and Frankfurt, they exchanged views about different forms of notation, tuning systems and ideas about sound. The pieces, developed especially for the Ensemble, display highly divergent artistic approaches, such as the inclusion of audio-visual or electronic elements or recourse to harmonies and rhythms of Gamelan music. The world premieres take place on October 6 and 7, launching ›Indonesia LAB‹ at Frankfurt LAB. In December, the works will be presented as part of the ›German season‹ in Indonesia. Before the concert, the experimental short film ›Ruang Suara: Soundscapes‹ by the British-Ethiopian video artist Theo Eshetu, who documented the intercultural musical encounter on film, will be screened.

RUANG SUARA is a joint project of Ensemble Modern, KfW Stiftung and Goethe-Institut Indonesia and is supported by the cultural foundation Kulturstiftung des Bundes.
