Ensemble in Residence
Ensemble Modern plays four concerts during its residency in Viitasaari, Finland. It performs Hans Zender’s ‘33 Veränderungen über 33 Veränderungen’, his complex one-hour composition interpreting Beethoven’s ‘Diabelli Variations’ (June 30), works by Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Brian Ferneyhough, the focus artists of this year’s festival edition (July 2), as well as a chamber music concert featuring works by Helmut Lachenmann and Mark Andre, among others (July 1). Together with participants of the master course and the conductors Franck Ollu and Steven Schick, the Ensemble will work on Birtwistle’s impressive work ‘Theseus Game’, which it presents tog ether with a world premiere by the Finnish composer Lauri Suponnen during the festival’s finale (July 4).
