Revolution and Beauty

Honouring Luigi Nono

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his death, the Berlin State Opera presents several events dedicated to the musician and musical revolutionary Luigi Nono at the Schillertheater. For Nono, society and art could never be separated. In his opinion, the political always held the potential for aesthetic expression. Perhaps the most characteristic element of the composer’s personality was his refusal to settle for the status quo or even accept it. Thus, the terms “revolution” and “beauty” were never diametrically opposed in his mind, but became interrelated necessities in his music. On May 9 (at 9 pm) Ensemble Modern performs Nono’s “Incontri”, “Canti per tredici”, “Polifonica-Monodia-Ritmica” and “Guai ai gelidi mostri”, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher at the Schillertheater in Berlin.
