Steve Reich’s “Music for 18 musicians” at the Festival Berlin Atonal
Written between 1974 and 1976, the piece “Music for 18 musicians” is “doubtlessly one of the best pieces I have ever written. Sometimes everything just comes together and you’ve created this wonderful organism – that is exactly what happened with this piece,” thus Steve Reich. On August 20 the Ensemble Modern opens the festival “Berlin Atonal” with this successful work. For five days, the festival presents music, installations, seminars and workshops at Berlin’s Kraftwerk: a now-defunct heating plant in Berlin’s Mitte district, no longer an insider tip for cognoscenti only.
