»Die Weber«

by Johannes Kalitzke at Vienna’s Konzerthaus

The silent movie »Die Weber« by Friedrich Zelniks, based on the play of the same name by Gerhart Hauptmann, is considered one of the best Hauptmann adaptations in German film history. Besides capturing the economic and social instability of the 1920s, the film deals with the history of the Silesian weavers and their rebellion against sinking wages. Johannes Kalitzke composed a cycle of music for this film, interweaving genre-typical music like workers’ songs, marches and folk music into a complex rhythmical texture. On November 9, the EM performs this cycle under Johannes Kalitzke’s baton, accompanying a screening of the film.
