Contemporary Music Workshop
Where experienced amateur or professional musicians meet, try out new things and shape the sound of today together.With this project, the musicians of Ensemble Modern open their door to ambitious musicians eager for musical discoveries – in different formations, small ensembles and individual lessons. An inspiring place offering joint music-making, experimentation and learning at eye level.
Where and when?
The workshop has several phases:
Period 1: March 1, 2026 – Initial meeting
Period 2: May 10, 2026 – First group rehearsals
Period 3: June 6 & 7, 2026 – Ensemble rehearsals
Period 4: June 13 & 14, 2026 – Ensemble rehearsals, dress rehearsal and concert
The rehearsals and the concert will take place at Sound Port Frankfurt, the premises of the Deutsche Ensemble Akademie e.V., Schwedlerstraße 2–4, 60314 Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
What’s on the programme and who can register?
The programme offers intense exchange with experienced members of Ensemble Modern from all instrument groups, including Eva Böcker (cello), Megumi Kasakawa (viola) and Johannes Schwarz (bassoon). Amateur musicians of any age are invited to apply if they are interested in contemporary music and wish to expand their experience and knowledge by learning new playing techniques and rehearsing current works. Previous experience with contemporary music is not required.
The course includes ensemble and individual rehearsals of selected works. Workshops on various subjects complement the course offerings. The course culminates in a public concert with members of Ensemble Modern on June 14, 2026.
The works for the Contemporary Music Workshop will be announced at the end of January; the necessary scores and parts will be sent to the participants in good time before the first working period. Participants will play their own instruments.
What does the Contemporary Music Workshop cost?
There is a fee of 350 Euros per musician for all the working periods. The fee covers the working periods specified above and two individual lessons for each participant (45 minutes each, during the working periods) as well as meals.
