Sound Port Frankfurt
Workshop for Music and ExperimentationAfter a landmark decision by the City of Frankfurt am Main and the State of Hessen in the spring of 2025 on the construction of the Academy of Music and Performing Arts and the Frankfurt LAB at Campus Bockenheim, Ensemble Modern, the International Ensemble Modern Akademie and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie will remain in their current location at Schwedlerstraße in Frankfurt’s Ostend district, united under the roof of the German Ensemble Academy.
At this shared location, the three institutions will now bundle their competencies, energies and experience to create an innovative and creative music centre: the ›Sound Port Frankfurt – Workshop for Music and Experimentation‹. In a vision process (Vision 2030) supported by the Crespo Foundation, the owner of the property, ideas for the conceptual positioning and architectural development of the compound were developed. With its unique and multi-faceted profile, the Sound Port Frankfurt is intended as the home base for an inspired community, a site for transdisciplinary production and an academy for experimental learning. Increased collaboration between the three institutions will strengthen their future viability and resilience, and the Sound Port Frankfurt will serve as a vibrant catalyst for Frankfurt’s urban society.
Thanks to support from the Crespo Foundation, initial projects and formats are currently being developed and implemented as pilot projects, for example the education project ›Open Young Ears!‹. Further financing will be necessary for the implementation of the comprehensive concepts as well as the physical reconstruction of the site.
