New Video Portraits
of Ensemble Modern MembersWhat happens when you experience music up close? When you not only hear but also see how sound is created – in detail, in the moment? Since 1 June 2025, Ensemble Modern has been publishing an extraordinary video series portraying the members of Ensemble Modern. In these videos, they present personal solo pieces that tell of something the musicians hold dear. The focus is on the encounter – with the sound, with the instrument, with the individual. Each video is a close-up portrait. The filmic realisation is particularly noteworthy: a five-person team from ›D32 moving visual content‹ spent several days filming the musicians. Extreme macro shots reveal movements that would otherwise remain unseen. The camera captures the workings of the keys and valves, the vibration of the strings, the breathing. The individuality of the videos also reflects the ensemble’s polyphony. And just as diverse as the musicians’ origins – from eight different countries – is the spectrum of composers selected, including from France, Great Britain, Slovenia, Russia, the USA and Uzbekistan. The videos will be published on an ongoing basis on our website and social media channels.
