Mad Dog

at the Alte Oper Frankfurt
He is a jack-of-all-trades, or perhaps the jack-in-the-box of New Music: H(einz) K(arl) Gruber, born in 1943, is one of the most unconventional representatives of his profession. Wit and Viennese charm mark the approach to New Music of this native Viennese, who studied double bass and composition in his hometown. HK Gruber has enjoyed a fruitful working relationship with Ensemble Modern since the early 1980s. In addition to ›Zeitfluren‹ and the Cello Concerto by HK Gruber, Ensemble Modern also performs Bernd Richard Deutsch’s ›Mad Dog‹ under Gruber’s baton during its 5th Subscription Concert. The Austrian composer imagined music to illustrate 24 hours in the life of a dog.
