[...] The disc XX/XXI by former BBC Young Musician of the Year winner and Ensemble Modern leader Rafal-Zambrzycki-Payne (Ensemble Modern Medien EMCD-015) has one overriding problem: the piano is too prominent in the mix, to the extent that it drowns out the violin at numerous points. That aside, Zambrzycki-Payne delivers a thrilling performance of the Lutoslawski Partita, full of impish wit that can transform itself in a moment into something more introspective and sinister. His control is masterful in the fragile harmonics and slippery glissandos that Lutoslawski demands, and he's not afraid to be fortright in the last movement. There's a slightly subdued feeling, however, in the Janácek Sonata - Zambrzycki-Payne's performance is precise, poised and elegant, but it could perhaps have been delivered with more abandon. His Bartók First Violin Sonata, however, is colourful and tightly controlled, with some wonderfully expressive phrasing in the second movement, and a propulsive, volatile finale. [...]
